The Ninth Doctor is returning for a second season of adventures

September 15, 2021 by Alex Skerratt Leave a Comment

The Ninth Doctor is returning for a second series of audio adventures for Big Finish.

It may have been 16 years since the Ninth Doctor last appeared in Doctor Who, but his trip of a lifetime has continued thanks to the audio production company Big Finish. Christopher Eccleston returned to the Whoniverse in 2021 with a brand new series of adventures, and Big Finish has announced that his incarnation will be coming back to the TARDIS in 2022 and 2023.

The further adventures of the Ninth Doctor will be told across four box sets, each containing four stories, amounting to some 16 hours of Time Lord goodness. The first of these will land in May 2022, with the fourth box set scheduled to materialise in February 2023.

And for those of you who are looking for something extra special, the releases can also be purchased as limited edition vinyl LPs (triple gatefold) which will be restricted to 1,000 copies. People who select the vinyls will also have access to the download versions, plus the bonus behind-the-scenes content.

Christopher Eccleston said: “Just before Christmas in 2020, I walked into a small recording studio in an industrial estate in North London. Me and the sound engineer looked at each other and we smiled and said, ‘Let’s go!’ Then I started playing the Ninth Doctor again, and I loved it.

“It’s been one of the great joys for me of the past year. It’s a lovely way to do it, so I’m coming back to record more.”

The producer David Richardson added: “I’ve spent most of my summer weekends sitting in the garden, iPad on my lap, reading the scripts for The Ninth Doctor Adventures – Series Two. Happy days indeed. No spoilers but expect emotional, character-based stories, and lots of adventure – going deep into Earth’s past and into the far future.”

Richardson also dropped some hints as to what might be in store for the Ninth Doctor. Apparently, his second season of adventures will take the TARDIS to an old railway station, the seas of Titan, and “a very unusual furniture store in the present day.” Fantastic!

The Big Finish Chairman Jason Haigh-Ellery added: “I am so glad that Christopher has enjoyed his time with us so much that he has agreed to continue his travels in the TARDIS.  Bringing the Ninth Doctor back to the Doctor Who universe has been one of the few enjoyable parts of the past year and I am so glad that the adventures will continue!”

And for those of you trying to wrap your head around the Doctor Who continuity, these stories all take place prior to the 2005 series, before the Ninth Doctor met Rose. So if you’re planning a mega Doctor Who DVD / audio marathon any time soon, insert The Ninth Doctor Adventures after the War Doctor’s regeneration in ‘The Day of the Doctor.’

And while you’re waiting for the second season to arrive, you might want to catch up with The Ninth Doctor Adventures – Series One. Spread across four box sets of three stories each, these adventures take the Ninth Doctor from the Sphere of Freedom to the Metropolis film set, via a Cyberman or two. The third box set in this series is due to be released in November 2021, with the final instalment landing in February 2022.
