October marks the launch of the very first Time Lord Victorious novel. ‘The Knight, the Fool and the Dead’ is written by Steve Cole and is due for release in hardback and Kindle on October 1st.
Now, you may be wondering what this story is about, and should you stumble across it in Waterstone’s you’ll probably be none the wiser. The back cover simply reads: “You and the child are the last of your kind. You have flown so far. But your flight has ended, now.”
It’s a brief but tantalising preview, and indeed the somewhat longer blurb for this new Time Lord Victorious novel is a bit more helpful…
We live forever, barring accidents. Just like everyone else in the universe. The Doctor travels back to the Dark Times, an era where life flourishes and death is barely known…
Then come the Kotturuh – creatures who spread through the cosmos dispensing mortality. They judge each and every species and decree its allotted time to live. For the first time, living things know the fear of ending. And they will go to any lengths to escape this grim new spectre, death.
The Doctor is an old hand at cheating death. Now, at last, he can stop it at source. He is coming for the Kotturuh, ready to change everything so that life wins from the start. Not just the last of the Time Lords. The Time Lord Victorious.
For those of you who don’t know, “Time Lord Victorious” refers to the Tenth Doctor’s proclamation in ‘The Waters of Mars,’ where he adopted an almost god-like status in his insatiable desire to cheat death and control the universe around him. So it’s not a massive leap to assume that ‘The Knight, the Fool and the Dead’ takes place within this time period – perhaps in the gap between ‘The Waters of Mars’ and ‘The End of Time Part One.’
But what of the so-called Dark Times? Well, I talked about this in our main Time Lord Victorious piece and wondered whether it might refer to the “time of chaos” in the early days of Gallifrey.
Then again, it could be something completely different. So little is currently known about the Time Lord Victorious saga, given that ‘The Knight, the Fool and the Dead’ is one of the first major releases in this multimedia epic.
This new novel promises to be a good one, though. It comes from the writing quill of Steve Cole, who has a whole bookcase of Doctor Who adventures accredited to him – plus many more written under a pseudonym. In fact, his association with the programme goes back many years, as he used to be in charge of the Eighth Doctor range of BBC novels, as well as being the lucky man who got to decide which Doctor Who stories would be released on VHS.
So this man knows his Whoniverse, and he sounds like a solid choice to kick-start the Time Lord Victorious saga.
And you’d better start saving those pennies, because the releases are going to be coming thick and fast from here on out, continuing until at least March 2021.
However, if you’re strapped for cash, there is hope for you too, as one of the Time Lord Victorious releases – the Daleks! animated series – will be available for free on YouTube.
