Eric Roberts is returning as the Master! This new release from Big Finish – from the worlds of Doctor Who – sees the Doctor’s deadliest enemy return in one of his more obscure incarnations.
For those of you familiar with the worlds of Doctor Who, Eric Roberts’ Master needs no introduction. He was the Eighth Doctor‘s arch enemy in the 1996 TV movie, and (spoiler alert) was seemingly destroyed when he was sucked into the Eye of Harmony in the heart of the TARDIS.
But in the worlds of Doctor Who, you can’t keep a good villain down. It may have been a few years since Eric Roberts last donned the Master’s specs, but he’s back in business for a new Big Finish box set – titled simply Master! – which is due for release in 2021.
No way? Yes, way.
Indeed, this is a major new outing for Eric Roberts as the Master, despite appearing in 2019’s Ravenous box set and the recently-released Masterful collection. Master! is something of a spin-off, co-starring American actress Chase Masterson, who some of you may know as Leeta from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It’s a series that views the worlds of Doctor Who from a whole new perspective – namely, from a man who always dresses for the occasion.
Although it’s unlikely that the series’ other characters – the Daleks – will appreciate his wardrobe choices. Another staple from the worlds of Doctor Who, the metal mutants are also slated to appear in the Master! box set, voiced by Nicholas Briggs.
But given that these creatures were responsible for the Master’s execution in the TV movie – leading, ultimately, to his morphing into the body of Bruce (Eric Roberts) – it’s unlikely that they’ll be pally.
There will be plenty of time for them to work on their differences, though, as Master! is told across three, one hour stories: ‘Faustian’ by Robert Valentine; ‘Prey’ by Robert Whitelock; and ‘Vengeance’ by Matt Fitton.
And the final adventure promises to be a fascinating yarn as, according to the official synopsis, “Earth’s greatest hope against the Daleks lies with the Master.” Not an enviable situation, by all accounts.
