New details about the 2022 Doctor Who special emerge

November 24, 2021 by Alex Skerratt 1 Comment

The BBC has released more information about the 2022 Doctor Who special, set to air on New Year’s Day.

The next Doctor Who special will be titled ‘Eve of the Daleks’ and will see Jodie Whittaker join a guest cast of Aisling Bea (Quiz), Adjani Salmon (Dreaming Whilst Black) and Pauline McLynn (Father Ted). It will be the first of three Doctor Who specials to air in 2022, with the second due in spring, and the third in the autumn as part of the BBC’s centenary celebrations.

Here’s the synopsis for the upcoming episode…

“Sarah (Aisling Bea) owns and runs ELF storage, and Nick (Adjani Salmon) is a customer who visits his unit every year on New Year’s Eve. This year, however, their night turns out to be a little different than planned as they find themselves joining forces with the Doctor, Dan and Yaz in a fight against the Daleks.”

The next instalment promises to be more of a festive offering than the previous two specials ‘Resolution’ and ‘Revolution of the Daleks,’ with Terry Nation’s creations becoming something of a new year staple for the good Doctor. In the latest special, the travellers find themselves trapped in a time loop with the metal mutant, as the new trailer shows.

Moreover, the first teaser image showed a cracked TARDIS with red light seeping out of the wounds, suggesting that all is not well for the Doctor and her friends. But stay tuned for more information as we get it.

Mandip Gill is also returning as the Doctor’s companion Yaz, alongside newcomer John Bishop who was first introduced in Doctor Who: Flux.

This Doctor Who special will be one of the last to be overseen by showrunner Chris Chibnall, who will be departing along with Whittaker after the centenary episode. Filming has already wrapped on the final instalments, and the episodes are currently in post-production.

It will be down to new (old!) incoming showrunner Russell T Davies to decide on the identity of the Fourteenth Doctor. He will be returning to oversee Doctor Who‘s 60th anniversary and series beyond.
