Ultimate cosplay: The Fourth Doctor costume

June 22, 2020 by Alex Skerratt 6 Comments

Faithful old scarf! The Fourth Doctor costume has become iconic throughout the Whoniverse and beyond. Even the ‘not-we’s’ who are less familiar with the show recognise the iconic 18 ft., multi-coloured wonder as worn by Tom Baker throughout the 1970s.

We quite like it at Lovarzi! In fact it would be fair to say that the Fourth Doctor scarf has become our brand mascot. You can see it in our blog banner, and probably at the odd convention or two! Over the years many of you have been kind enough to use our scarf in your cosplay creations, and we wanted to showcase some of your amazing photos. (See here for more incredible uses for a Fourth Doctor scarf.)

Take a look at these great snapshots from Fourth Doctor costume experts Philip Smith and Christian Wilkes. It’s particularly exciting to see Christian at the foot of the iconic water tower in Roald Dahl Plass – the entrance, of course, to the most secret organisation in human history. (Now look me in the eye and tell me you wouldn’t listen to a Fourth Doctor / Torchwood box set…)

Torchwood. Tracking down alien life on earth, and arming the human race with jelly babies! Great work Christian.

Of course, the big question is: if the square on the hypotenuse equals the sum of the square on the other two sides, why is a mouse when it spins?! We never did know the answer to that one.

Have you got some Fourth Doctor costume pictures of your own? If so we’d love to see them! Feel free to email us with your snaps, and let us know if they’re okay for us to include in our blog, or on social media.

In the meantime, tell us – who is your favourite Doctor to cosplay for? Is the Fourth Doctor costume really the most iconic? Or do you prefer the trench coat and brainy specs? Let us know in the comments below!

Thank you for featuring the shots of me in my 4th Doctor costumes. I adore the be-scarfed look of the 4th Doctor and am delighted to own each of the variants you have produced over the years ( I even bought a second Season 16/17 version recently just because I love mine so much I would be devastated if it got damaged!)

My sincerest thanks to all at Lovarzi for the amazing Doctor Who products that have been released over the years, and I hope there will be many more to come!

    Hi Alex
I’m Andy, I’ve got a cosplay costume of the 7th Doctor and the 4th Doctor..
I bought the question mark jumper and silk scarf from this website, which are brilliant (I’ll send photos when I can) I managed to get the authentic replica of the 7th Doctor’s jacket (website – ACcosplay) and less than Β£100.
I have the 4th Doctor’s long multi-coloured scarf, bought it at the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff. I will send photos of me wearing both my costumes of the 4th Doctor and the 7th Doctor. All the best to you

My personal fave of the 4th Doctor’s coast be the plum purple trenchcoat from ‘Nightmare in Eden’.
One Doctor I want to cosplay as be the War Doctor (John Hurt).
