The limited edition Doctor Who The Collection sets are being re-released in standard packaging.
Previously, Doctor Who The Collection box sets had only been available as limited editions, but the BBC has now announced that two of the earliest releases – Season 12 and Season 19 – will be getting the re-release treatment. This time, though, the packaging will be less snazzy, with the fancy sleeves and gatefold flaps being replaced with standard plastic cases. However, the content will be exactly the same, and it looks like the spines will also line up – a victory for DVD shelves everywhere.
Doctor Who The Collection has caused something of a stir in recent years. Whilst popular, many of these box sets have become rarer than Zeiton, with scalpers snapping up the Blu-rays to re-sell at extortionate prices. The Season 12 collection was particularly elusive; I swear I saw one being offered for £800 at one point.
So the news of re-issues is a welcome one for Doctor Who fans hoping to complete their collections without having to re-mortgage their homes. And there are signs that resellers are responding to this development; some of the earlier Doctor Who The Collection sets are already being offered at much more reasonable prices. Thanks be to Ti.
But how do you feel about this news? Will you be getting the re-releases? And what’s the most absurd price you’ve seen on eBay? Let me know in the comments below.
