Cybermen: The Ultimate Guide

November 7, 2020 by Alex Skerratt Leave a Comment

What are the Cybermen? Many people have heard of these famous Doctor Who villains, but you may be wondering who they are, and where they come from. Moreover, you might be curious to know about their television adventures, and which ones to watch first.

Fear not. As always at Lovarzi, we’ve got your back. Your knowledge will be upgraded.

The first thing to note about these baddies is that they are not human. Well – not exactly. Originally, they were adapted humanoids from Earth’s twin planet Mondas. But at the same time, in a parallel reality, a deranged man called John Lumic ‘upgraded’ the humans of his Earth with cybersuits, and sent his creations on a deletion frenzy.

So their origins vary depending on which universe you’re living in. Are you with me so far? And more often than not, the Cybermen’s misadventures clash with those of our good friend the Doctor, as our handy infographic explains. Let’s begin with the classic era of Doctor Who…

Cybermen: the classic era

The above stories were all made during Doctor Who‘s original run, between 1963 and 1989. But of course (spoiler alert) the programme returned to our screens in 2005, and the metal monsters from Mondas were not far behind.

Well – kind of. The first Cybermen that we encounter in the New Who era are the ones made on the parallel Earth by the unhinged John Lumic. Fans would have to wait until 2017’s ‘World Enough and Time’ before the famous Mondasian Cybermen would once again grace our screens…

Of course, no one knows what’s next for these cybernetic creations. The Thirteenth Doctor encountered them three times (in one form or another) in Doctor Who Series Twelve. But that doesn’t mean they won’t rear their metal heads in Series Thirteen, hell bent on upgrading the universe. We’ll have to wait and see.

Are you ready for more Cybermen adventures? Or, if you’ve never seen them before, which story are you most excited to view? Let me know in the comments below.
