Is a classic Doctor Who monster returning for Series 13?

October 8, 2021 by Alex Skerratt Leave a Comment

A new teaser for Series 13 suggests that a classic Doctor Who monster could be returning.

With the new series of Doctor Who on the horizon, the BBC has started to drop some teasers in the build-up to transmission. Eagle-eyed viewers will have spotted the Doctor’s surprise appearance before Strictly Come Dancing last Saturday, and a new tweet recently posted by the official Twitter account suggests that a classic Doctor Who monster will be making an appearance in the next series.

Fans of the David Tennant era will instantly recognise this ship as one belonging to the Sontaran battle fleet. But in fact, the Doctor’s battle with the Sontarans goes back much further than this; he first encountered them during the 1974 adventure ‘The Time Warrior,’ and again in ‘The Sontaran Experiment,’ ‘The Invasion of Time’ and ‘The Two Doctors.’ In later years, the Doctor encountered a more benign member of their race in the form of Strax, who was a member of the Paternoster Gang.

So is this confirmation that this classic Doctor Who monster will be returning in Series 13? Not as such – it could just be a very similar-looking spaceship. Or perhaps the Sontarans have some background involvement in the upcoming story. But we will have to watch to find out.

Certainly, this latest teaser could tie-in with the brief video reveal that fans unlocked after solving a number of clues on the doctorwho.tv website. Perhaps this Doctor Who monster is, in fact, a Sontaran?
