A mysterious behind-the-scenes photo hints at John Barrowman’s Captain Jack coming back to Doctor Who this Christmas.
The character was last seen in Series 12’s Fugitive of the Judoon, in which Captain Jack – in a somewhat temperamental ship – issued a dire warning to companions Graham, Ryan and Yaz. He urged them to pass on a message to the Doctor, warning her not to give the lone Cyberman “what it wants, at all costs…”
But the immortal Captain was deprived the opportunity of meeting Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor, instead promising that “he’ll see her again, maybe not soon” but vowing to be there whenever she needs him.
Meanwhile, canny Who fans have been taking a closer look at an intriguing screenshot, taken from an official behind-the-scenes video, which appears to show a loitering Captain Jack Harkness. It’s thought to have been filmed during the production of the upcoming Revolution of the Daleks, as the other characters (the Doctor, Graham, Ryan and Yaz) are all wearing costumes that don’t appear to have been used in any of the Series 12 episodes. Some viewers have even claimed that John Barrowman’s voice can be heard in the clip.
And just to pour gasoline on this bonfire, John Barrowman himself has weighed into the debate on social media, retweeting the speculation (and photograph) with a thumbs up, two hand-claps and a kiss. Now, whilst none of us speaks Torchwood, we are reliably informed that this roughly translates into, “Yes Captain Jack is coming back to Doctor Who.” Nice.
Of course, no one can be certain about his casting until the BBC makes an announcement, or until the episode airs. It’s currently slated for the festive season.
